Book Boyfriend Report – Xander’s Chance by Lizzy Ford

Xander's-ChanceDid you feel that or was I the only one who had that special tingle in my pants? Yeah, Lizzy is sorta like the JJ Abrams of books for me. She isn’t someone who I gravitate to on the basis of heart-attack-humor but she blows me the eff away with every freakin book on the side of supa-natural and paranorms. She’s got it and I get it. Once I read it, I get a tingle. Sometimes it makes me pee because it is so freakaliciously amazekittens! Other times its the deal where her men make me get excited and it’s a different wetness and tingle altogether. I’m still fanning myself over Rhyn and waving my Team Decker flag. Please don’t ask me what the hell I’m doing licking my paper doll of Nathan or petting my screensaver of Chace. I am pleading the fifth on all accounts. This is also where I’d like to make a plea for sexy men with red necklaces to come bite me. Please, Xander, come nibble me!

Xander’s Chance is the spin-off from the War of Gods series. The earlier series was centered around Damian, The White God and his Scoobie-Gang and ends with the Grey God’s story. REALLY if you are going to appreciate this story in it’s fullness you should do your homework and read the previous saga because you really have to learn how it is that Jessi comes to find herself in a situation where she is sent to be with Xander and why it matters. I could explain it to you much better than I’m about to, but honestly, you should read the books. Long story short though…

There is a White God, Grey God and a Black God in the mortal world. Jessi’s very young, unfortunate, run-with-the-wrong-crowd cousin is “saved” by a skeevy teen named Jonny who gives her Jessi the mission: Get Xander’s necklace with the red gem. Simple enough; Muhahaha! The Black God has just invited her to steal the source of what keeps the great vampire from cracking the world opening and sucking it dry. No problem for Xander’s Girl Tuesday.

Lizzy really sets this up rather brilliantly and with a little twist of surreal life. Xander is a celebrity and he plays up his monster quality with public relations, women, magazine editorials, women, night life, women, and an ego on the region of a good size metropolis. Jessi takes over being his assistant as a temporary situation and quickly sees that he is difficult to handle and hard to resist. His bedroom is a revolving door for whom she names the women by days of the week and finds that Tuesdays are empty and she needs to be sure that she does not fall to the temptation to fill the spot. She is taking care of the playboy and his cat and it’s a great pay but Xander is on at FULL GO all times and it’s hard for her to stay on her toes with him. Which is just what he hopes. Because once this guy gets an in he can plant ideas in your head and he can pull things out. He can manipulate every situation and he really wants to get Jessi under him and in between his teeth. Oh and booked on his Tuesdays.

The backstory for how Xander became “Xander” is a really fantastic. She has great mythbuilding. It also pays that she has the world from the War of Gods saga behind this but more to the point she is actually giving an extreme to show you this is one world so that this is why this is not the world you see. I’m going to admit something that will make me a poor Sherrilyn Kenyon fan but I wish this was how the history of Acheron read. I’m sorry but if his book was as succinct as this was and it was all set up like this I might not have lost steam reading the Dark Hunter series. I love Xander’s character and as far as putting him in a frame of comparison with others in the War of God series I sort of think of him as a Darian/Dustin although he’s far more mischievous. He does have the best pairing out of all those in the pre-series except that of Jules and Yully. I heart Yully <3

I recommend this if you are a Lizzy reader. I think you would also like JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. Madeline Pryce’s Dark Series is also a great series to look into if you like this.

Xander’s Chance Synopsis:

A continuation of the “War of Gods” saga …

As the single-most powerful vampire on the planet, Xander is the ultimate bored predator with too much time on his hands. He manipulates the minds of immortals for fun and bullies around the Gods, while guarding the secret source of his power, a crystal that can wipe out the planet. But beneath the surface, he’s a shrewd creature who learned the brutal lesson of why there must be a balance between good and evil. An unwilling protector of the playthings known as humans, he knows when and where to use his power – and never to let anyone close enough to betray him. It’s easy to do, since he has the power to read the minds of everyone around him.

Except for one: Jessi, an innocent looking woman with an unusual talent who shows up unexpectedly in his life. Her sudden appearance is too convenient to be coincidence or chance. Xander determines quickly that she was sent by someone, but he can’t read her mind to discover why.

Jessi’s secret – and Xander’s – have the power to forever change the human world. Intrigued by a new sort of challenge, Xander won’t know how much danger he’s in, until he’s placed his fate in the hands of a woman whose betrayal will cost either his heart or his life.

Xander’s Chance Excerpt:

“Best day of my life,” she said through clenched teeth.

“You’re not fooling anyone.” he told her calmly.

Play along. It wasn’t working. He knew it. She wasn’t certain she could pretend, with the heat in her blood. She might just melt at his feet like Toni did.

Of course the control freak would choose a pose where he was holding her down with the sheer size of his body, her hands pinned by her head. Agitated by him and the fire he caused, she was also awed by how small and delicate his muscular frame made her feel. She was trying hard to ignore the sensations in her body.

“Hold the pose, Xander,” the man on top of her whispered.

“Hold the pose, Xander,” Laurencio directed.

Jessi looked at him, perplexed as to how Laurencio head him from the ten feet separating them.

“Wanna see it again?” Xander asked.

“See what””

“Break out those fangs, Xander.”

Laurenico repeated the words.

“So he does what you say,” Jessi said.

“They all do. It’s one of my special talents,” he said. “I can manipulate minds.”

“And you’re a vampire. I get it. You’re messing with me.”

“Watch,” he directed. He lowered his head until his hot breath tickled her ear. She shivered at the sensation of his roughened jaw against her cheek and the heat of his bare chest. “Pretened it hasn’t been five years sice you’ve gotten laid, Jessi, and relax.” His whisper was barely audible, eve as his lips moved agains her ear.

“Hey, pretend it hasn’t been five years since you’ve gotten laid, Jessi, and relax, “Toni taunted.

“You son of a bitch!” Jessi hissed at Xander. “It’s been four, and now everyone knows it!”

Xander eased away from her, satisfied. “Ready for the fangs?”

Secrets of a Vampire,” she recalled suddenly. “What total fangirl doesn’t want to be bitten by her idol.”

“Fan request granted.”

The photographer’s assistant yelped suddenly, and she turned her head, needing the distraction from the infuriating wall of pure male lying on top of her. She saw the camera in the sand, one of the tripod legs two feet shorter than the other two. Laurencio rushed to it, snatching it from his assistant and cradling it to check for sand. Gerry was covering up a laugh while Toni appeared startled.

“This might hurt a little.”

Jessi’s focus returned to Xander. His face six inches away, he was gazing at her with a strange light in his eyes, but it wasn’t the glow that caught her attention.

“Omigod. Those look so real!” She breathed, staring at the four inch fangs.

Xander was silent for a long moment, holding her gaze. She couldn’t see any signs that the fangs were prosthetic. They were the same shade of white as the rest of his teeth and seemed as natural extention from his gums. He’d been holding her down when he put them on, puzzling her as to how he did put the on. They were even with the teeth around them, as if his incisors had just …grown.

Like Jonny’s.

“It wasn’t an invitation!” she blurted out. “You are not going to bite me. I don’t care what you make Laurencio say.”

“You sure?” His half-smile was back. He squeezed her forearms in reminder she wasn’t able to do anything about it if he did decide to bite her.

If you ever want another cup of coffee, you won’t do it,” she replied. “Promise me you won’t bite me.

“Would it bother you if I did?”

Her head dropped back, and she swallowed hard. The moment stretched on as the others worked on the camera and tripod. Jessi felt Xander’s heartbeat against her chest. His breathing synced with hers, until they breathed the same air at the same pace. The heat and size of his body, the erotic pose, his direct gaze … all fed the desire burning within her.

“It’s not gonna work,” she whispered. “I won’t be Tuesday.”

“I’ve got a week.”

“I’m going to lunch with Gerry tomorrow.”

“He knows his place in this mess,” he mused. “I’ll make you a deal. Be Tuesday, and I won’t bite you.”

“No to both!” she said, hearing her own uneve breathing. “I don’t want to sleep with some sadistic man-whore, and I don’t want rabies.”

“I think they’re called gigolos, and I am gonna bite you.” His decisive whisper was husky.

Her eyes went to the fangs the size of paring knives. A bite with those things would kill her. There was no way he was serious.

“Fine you win. I believe you’re a vampire now. But I’m not sleeping with you,” she relented.

“Wrong answer.”

“We’re set Xander,” Laurencio sounded relieved. “Nothing wrong with my camera.

The assistant straightened her hair once more then stepped back.

“Love the fangs,” Laurencio said.

“Give her a bite, Xander,” Xander whispered.

“Giver her a bite, Xander.”

“I will drop you and your cat off at the humane society!” she said starting to believe he was serious.

“Just don’t move,” Xander told her. “It won’t hurt. If you do … no guarantees you make it out of this one alive. Your choice.” He lowered his head to the side of her neck away from the camera and nuzzled her neck in a way that made he heart race faster.

“You won’t bite me,” she said. A small part of her hoped he did or at least, he turned that nuzzling into a hot kiss.

“Don’t move,” he warned.

His grip on her forearms tightenedm and he pressed them into the sand. It was the second sign he was serious. The third: a pinch in her neck. She jerked at her arms, unable to dislodge them from his grip.

Jessi felt his teethy sink into her neck, confused when there was no pain beyond the initial puncture. She heard the sound of the camera snapping pictures and began to think she entered some sort of surreal world. Utterly still, she forced herself to breathe, or she’d pass out.
