Man Crush Everyday – Blood Mate by Mina Carter

Blood-Mate-Stroke“Lieutenant Darcy Foster. Apart from the fact that he has a girls name, he’s not a half bad as a soldier.”

I think that Darce might be compensating for the girl’s name by being overly smexy. This guy made my me-OW in the first Project Rebellion novel with his rough edged unpredictability and snark. Darce isn’t the guy you want in your corner, cause you never want to corner this guy, the results would be anyone’s guess. He’s reliable in the way that you can rely on him to be loyal but not rely on him to react in defense of that loyalty the same way twice. That his mate is a Blood makes no sense to anyone but him… he gets it totally. Toni is exactly what he has dreamed of all his life. That life has been one that would cause any normal Joe to ask for instructions as to how Darcy made it through first grade. This man is a quandary and Toni Fielding is the woman to work this word problem out.

Toni and Darce have a very similar birth in the Project as subjects; both were created without their volunteering for their participation in the Project. Antonia Fielding she has been fed a line, hook and then the rod about what the other types of paranormals at the compound behave as and are capable. She has no idea that they are just like her for the most part and that they are subject to a really horrible end. She’s about to learn that. She’s about to learn lessons so heartbreakingly dear that she will come to know how deep she is in the Projects plans; how badly she’s betrayed her own.

Darce “sacrificed” himself so that his pack, Captain and his mate could get away, and Darce could catch his mate. In that way that males think with their peens he forgot about how he would keep himself from getting effed in the A at the compound that created Lycans, Bloods and Reanimates. Kinda shortsighted, but that is Darce for you… his sight is about 8-10 inches long and has the girth of–nevermind. When his mate repeatedly roofies his non-furry butt up with silver and then he’s dumped in a series of torture chambers the only thing he has going for him is that that same mate keeps showing up to check in on him. He thinks it’s a sign of hope, I wish he could hear me because all of the concentration camp administration visited the bunks and experiment bunkers too. Camp-Make-A-Monster isn’t that different than Mengele and his experiments. Your girl gave you to the baddies. She may not be a Nazi but she is coming after you have been worked over… that is little fudged. I’m not saying she should bust down the walls of Buchenwald or anything but there were favors exchanged all over camps in WWII. I might be overthinking this but Darce took a lot of pain and Toni came out of this rather easy. She got like one good smackdown. She is a vamp, she is going to live for-forty-million-evers, eff her up some more and equal the score. She has some retribution coming.

As you can see I am not a friend of the Blood-Bimbo who stole my Darce from me and gave him back to the monsters that made him into a wolf! I know that Toni has a lot of complexities of her own since she was on the other side of the Project and she was spoon fed the rhetoric for a long time. She is really a great soldier and she is complying to the orders of her higher-ups when she tries to quell a rebellion at a local hospital. My issue with her is that she has all these itches and she is an intelligent tick. She should know what side of the camp the latrines are on after being there so long. If it lands in a pile and looks like crap, smells like crap, has the consistency of crap when you toe it with your boot–you don’t need to taste it to verify that they are feeding you shit. She bugs me out for all the reasons Mina meant to make her Antonia Fielding: the character of her, the cut of her jib. the way she made my Darce save her mosquitoed behind.

Whatever, I’m done with her. I ain’t got nothing good to say about her. My granny used to say if you ain’t got nothing good to say, feed them poison and bury them in the neighbors garden. Toni she gonna be the source of some mighty fine cherry tomatoes.

In this book you see a little introduction to the characters for the upcoming SARA novel, whet your whistle, Toni lets the SARA’s escape and then Jack and his men met and are freaked the eff out by them; I can’t wait to get my lips on Brett Perkins. EYES! Eyes on Brett Perkins. I’m looking forward to the new series, but hope that there is something still left in this broken cookie for another book or so.

This was supposed to be a review about how awesome Darce was, a Man Crush Review, Toni the wicked, junked-up hypodermic needle, took over the post. It’s a brokedown Crush That Ho Review now. She’s such a me, me, me character! God! I hate her!

Don’t think I didn’t like this book, it’s like angry sex, I loved this book for making me hate it! I don’t have to like what is going on in a book or the characters to determine if the book is good or not. Actually, as a book reviewer books don’t get to work like that for me. I have to look at storycrafting, the continuity, the strength of the plot, the durability of the characters, and if I read a lot of books by the author, like I have read by Mina–the author’s diversity in writing and creativity across genres, series and different books. I hate Toni, that is non-fiction there. But I wasn’t lying when I said she was a complex character and then laid out the qualities Mina used to developed her to be such a strong and compelling bitch. I don’t get the luxury of saying I hate her, I hate the book, like so many others do. I have to look past that to say Mina knocked this out of the ballpark by bringing the fight back to the Project Compound, reintroducing the “monsters” and then giving Toni her chance at redemption. These books are more action, paranormal, sci-fi romantic-ish episodes rather than real soak in the sweat and body fluids bow-chick-a-wow-wow and they are fast paced and pow! Pow! Pow! Mina hit Perfect Mate and this one solid and out of the park. I hate Toni. I love Darcy. I love Jack. I love Lillian… I love Mina. I want to have a manimal of my own. Someone want to draw me a novella. Wink. Wink. Nudge. Nudge.

Blood Mate Excerpt:

Neither had noticed her where she was half crouched in the darkness at the back of the truck, so she cleared her throat. Both men jumped, their faces draining of color when they recognized her, fear in their eyes before they tried  to hide it. She knew the words from the manual, had read them herself way back when. Never show fear. Animals who sense fear attack.

She didn’t attack Instead she smiled. It didn’t appear to ease their discomfort. Pity.

“I’d listen to…” She tilted her head to read the second man’s name-badge. “Doctor Blevins, if I were you, James. Hybrids don’t exist. I should know. I’ve been here long enough…”

She slid her hands under Foster’s side and started to half-roll, half-slide him toward the back of the truck. Sure, she could have lifted him bodily and dumped him on the trolley without much trouble, but it was never good to give away too much of what she could do to the scientists. Better that they thought she was weaker than she was, just in case. Never knew when she might need that element of surprise.

“They’re just an urban myth…” She grunted with effort as she pushed Foster to the edge. Lanky-ass piece of shit. He might have looked lean but he was packed with muscle and damned heavy. “A cautionary tale.”

James laughed, the sound nervous, and looked from her to Blevins and back again.

“Cautionary tale about what?”

She moved without warning, leaping over the prone form of the werewolf and the trolley to land the other side. The swift move took both men by surprise, Blevins a shade quicker to respond than his colleague. He backed up as she got right into James’s face,  her extended claws tickling over the young man’s Adam’s apple. For a moment dark temptation filled her. Just one little scratch, a tiny nick, and the virus would enter his system. Turn him.

No, not turn him. Any cut would kill him, thanks to the shit they made the techs and admin staff take on a daily basis.

“That.” She smiled again, keeping the expression small and tight. Then she retracted her claws and stepped back. Her manner was not pleasant. Not happy. Just…there.

“Don’t turn your back, James. Never get complacent,” she warned in a low voice. “Don’t ever forget that we’re not human. Not anymore.”

Meet Mina Carter:

Mina was born and raised in the East Farthing of Middle Earth (otherwise known as the Midlands, England) and spend her childhood learning all the sorts of things generally required of a professional adventurer. Able to ride, box, shoot, make and read maps, make chainmail and use a broadsword (with varying degrees of efficiency) she was disgusted to find that adventuring is not considered a suitable occupation these days.

So, instead of slaying dragons and hunting vampires and the like, Mina spends her days writing about hot shifters, government conspiracies and vampire lords with more than their fair share of RAWR. Turns out wanna-be adventurers have quite the turn of imagination after all…

(But she keeps that sword sharp, just in case the writing career is just a dream and she really *is* an adventurer.)

The boring part: A full time author and cover artist, Mina can usually be found hunched over a keyboard or graphics tablet, frantically trying to get the images and words in her head out and onto the screen before they drive her mad. She’s addicted to coffee and would like to be addicted to chocolate, but unfortunately chocolate dislikes her.

Perfect Mate Synopsis:

The Project Rebellion, Book 1

Monsters do exist…and they’re the good guys.

Lillian Rosewood leads an ordinary, boring life working as the manager of a psychiatric hospital. The highlights of her day, other than her skinny hot chocolate, are the hunky guards who work in the secure section. Until a late-night emergency is wheeled in.

Captain Jack Harper is insane, drop-dead gorgeous…and just had his abdomen shredded. Despite the fact they’re not an emergency room, Lillian can’t turn him away and risk a death on her hands. Unable to get the handsome soldier out of her mind, Lillian sneaks into the restricted area to check on him. What she finds is beyond belief. Somehow Jack has managed to heal himself from a near-fatal wound in mere hours.

When one of the doctors, Walker, attempts to rape her, things go from bad to worse. In the blink of an eye, Jack is loose and Walker is dead… and Lillian must accept a truth about her rescuer that will change her world forever. What if the patients aren’t insane? What if their stories of secret government experiments and monsters are true?

Warning: Contains blood, mayhem and nude werewolves operating heavy weaponry. Large amounts of sarcasm and smart-ass vampires may offend some readers. No civilian hospital staff were harmed in the making of this story.

Blood Mate Synopsis:

The Project Rebellion, Book 2

The only thing they have in common? Really…sharp…teeth.

Major Antonia Fielding has one goal: to escape the clutches of the Project. With the blood-virus infecting her system, though, a body bag is likely her only way out. Until her boss lets slip that he may just have a cure for her—if she brings in an escaped Lycan.

Can she trust him? Now there’s the million-dollar question. Then again, can she afford not to take that chance?

Darce Foster was a Special Forces soldier, until the Project got hold of him. Now he’s a Lycan, a lab-created werewolf, this close to escaping his creators—until another of the Project’s experiments stops him in his tracks. Not because she has the power to hold him, but because he instantly recognizes the impossible. The vampiress is his mate.

Allowing her to bring him in is his only choice—and possibly the last mistake of his life.

Enemies or lovers, it doesn’t matter. When they discover that the Project is hiding yet more secrets, they must work together to bring it down…or die in the attempt.

Warning: Contains a cocky wolf who won’t take no for an answer, an ice-queen losing her cool and a pack full of hunky werewolves bent on rescue. And zombie spidermen.

Not-Dead-Enough-StrokeNot Dead Enough Synopsis:

Project Rebellion (SARA Book 1)
This is an offshoot of the Project Rebellion Series

There is life after death, unfortunately for them, it’s the same one…

Brett Perkins was a soldier, until the Project killed him. Now he’s finding that life after death isn’t so hot. With the Project base destroyed, he and his team have been tasked with running down and destroying a group of rogue Bloods. Unfortunately the vampires always seem to be one step ahead. Then they start kidnapping women…

Thanks to her soon-to-be ex-husband, Julia Collier is despised and reviled in the small town of Greenwood. His stories have painted her as everything from an air-headed gold-digger to a nymphomaniac serial killer. She can’t even shop in the local store without suffering abuse from her fellow townsfolk, and that’s before the late night calls or her ex’s bully-boys following her.

When her home is broken into, Julia assumes it’s her husband making good on his threats to ‘deal with her for good’. She never dreams that it will lead a descent into another, terrifying world. One inhabited by werewolves, vampires…and zombies. Or that zombies could be so damn hot. Espeically one certain example who makes her heart pound and all her common sense disappear over the horizon. After all, what woman in her right mind would fall for the undead?

Unless the undead aren’t dead at all, but something more than human, from a world she’ll need all her wits and new abilities to survive the battle between the undead…and the dead.

Project Rebellion: They’re not heroes, they’re something else… They’re SARAs and they’re about to kick ass.
