Why didn’t I think of this first?! I think Laurann totally snuck a sly one in here. I’m not even going to sing and dance an intro to this book, y’all are getting the meat straight off the bone!
Laurann Dohner is one awfully naughty woman. I would even have my Species mate, Brass, spank her for what she has done with Haunting Blackie–but I’m convinced she totally would consider that a reward!
Blackie remembers nothing beyond a beautiful human woman waking him after he was beaten and tortured by more of her kind on a facility on earth. He remembers her sneaking him out of the secure area to the roof and telling him how to access the memories and training held within his implants so he would be able to escape. And he remembers how she settled him when his instincts flared and temporarily made him sense her as the enemy even when his mind told him she was not. And he will never ever forget the way his passion flared as the feel of her against him burned itself into his memory and the promise she made to join him and the promise he made her not to choose another.
Decades past and still nightmare of that night, the sacrifice that woman took for his safety and the weeks he waited for her remain with him. Somewhere in his dreams part of him still waits for the one his people had called Hellfire, a Cyborg sympathizer who had help his people flee Earth. Part of him waits for her to join him after all this time and the nightmares are terrible. Until the moment he and Gene board a damaged freighter with females aboard after they overhear them recklessly engage a pirate fleet. To his astonishment two lone females are all that populate the space vessel and one of them is the woman who has lived on in his dreams. Hellfire. Only she wasn’t a human sympathizer at all.

Eve, is the first in her line. She was created not long after the Cyborg’s themselves were. Using the DNA of a canine and a human female, Cameron Henderson made the Canine Unit. Only female in gender and designed to be loyal to one while retaining a sense of family, he had thought they would be his pets. The Canine Units identified with the Cyborgs and they saw them as their dominants and gave them their devotion rather than their maker. When the Cyborgs made arrangements to flee Earth they made arrangements to ally with the Canine Units to get access to Cyborgs not freely given to others. For their allegiance they were betrayed and paid the most horrible price.

Since Blackie was first introduced in Burning Up, Flint he’s been one big crapsicle sucker. I think throughout each book you could have actually been adding notches into your Kindle cover for each poopheaded thing he did. He’s been downright cruel, brutal, and panty twisted about an infinite amount of things that really made him appear as black as his name. But in Haunting Blackie you almost immediately forget it all within a few moments in his head. To see things through his eyes and understand his rationale it’s not really excusing his heartlessness so much as starting to get a lay of the land on the Blackiescape. You realize that he isn’t necessarily doing what he thinks is right; he is doing what he thinks is necessary by the word of those who has saved them all. Blackie actually has a good deal of reconciling of facts going on in this book and it’s often a very hard thing for him to see and do.
Haunting Blackie has a nice showing of former Cyborg pairs more so than any of the books previous, and that is really nice. Reunions and guest starring happens a lot in the Species and Raine on Me books but it doesn’t seem to happen all that much on Garden and I long for it. For once Zorus is around and I don’t want to sink my foot deeply into his bum until I’m wearing him as a boot. He’s actually one of the characters I like most in the book.
I recommend the Cyborg Seduction Series by Laurann Dohner for readers of Evangeline Anderson’s Brides of the Kindred, Ruth D. Kerce’s Xylon Warriors or Belle Starr by Belinda McBride.
