Albert had to smile. Johann\u2019s friendliness and enthu- siasm were infectious. Without warning, a lightbulb went off in the electrical expert\u2019s head. \u201cWait for a second,\u201d Albert said, tugging at a chain around his neck, pulling something out of his linen shirt. \u201cWant to see something exciting?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMore interesting than electric lights? You bet!\u201d Johann nodded eagerly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Albert dangled a brass object on a silver chain, Johann\u2019s eyes grew large. \u201cWow, what is that?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a compass. My father gave it to me. Have you ever seen one before?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shaking his head, Johann guided Albert over to a bale of hay, and the two boys sat. \u201cI haven\u2019t,\u201d Johann said, mesmerized by the fantastic device. \u201cWhat does it do?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Albert held out the gleaming brass compass with the twelve sparkling gems. So, Johann could see it better, he opened the top and rotated the compass. \u201cSee how the needle always points north no matter how I move the case?\u201d His bright, brown eyes twinkled as the mystery of the unknown captured his soul. \u201cSomeday, I will understand why it does that.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
