Darkness Excerpt:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\u201cThere used to be more ape primates but few made it out alive. They are pretty aggressive, with short tempers.\u201d Jinx threw open a door. \u201cWelcome to my favorite place.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kat peered in and grinned. \u201cWow!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you want to have some fun?\u201d<\/p>\n
She stepped into the room and stared up at the sixty-foot wall. The entire surface had been sectioned into three parts. The first was covered in rocks, the middle smooth with handholds and the third appeared to be a flat cliff face with small cracks running through it, as if nature had put it there.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur climbing room. We added this. The original ceiling wasn\u2019t high enough. Would you like to try one? I\u2019d suggest the handholds. That is the easiest.\u201d<\/p>\n
She stared at the ceiling. \u201cI don\u2019t see safety lines anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe mat is thickly padded. It won\u2019t kill you if you fall.\u201d<\/p>\n
She turned to him. \u201cYou don\u2019t use safety equipment?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat would be the fun in that?\u201d He laughed. \u201cWatch but don\u2019t stand directly below me. I wouldn\u2019t want to fall and land on you. That would hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n
He crossed the room and kicked off his shoes. In seconds he was climbing the rock section. He used his fingers and toes to hold his weight while he changed each handhold. He made it to the top in record time and turned his head to grin at her from above.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt looks dangerous,\u201d she called.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot for us. Watch.\u201d<\/p>\n
He kicked off and Kat gasped when he flipped in the air, falling. He landed in a crouch and stood. \u201cEasy.\u201d<\/p>\n
She was too stunned to speak. He approached with a grin.<\/p>\n
\u201cFelines are good at leaping and landing. The floor is very padded. I wouldn\u2019t want to do that on solid ground. Our bone density is stronger than yours but they can be broken. Anything over thirty feet is iffy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou look pretty agile to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
He laughed. \u201cThat\u2019s easy. Don\u2019t watch me run on a six-inch-wide balance beam. I can\u2019t make it twenty feet without missing a step. I actually wanted to land a little closer to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI couldn\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTry the handholds. I\u2019ll catch you if you fall. You\u2019d have to slip to do that. They are for\u2026\u201d He sobered. \u201cUm, beginners. I have faith in you.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was her turn to laugh. \u201cI\u2019m glad someone does.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHave a little fun, Kat.\u201d<\/p>\n
She bent to remove her shoes. \u201cOkay. I know you guys have an onsite medical center, right? I might need to use it. I\u2019d hate to go home with crutches or an arm in a sling.\u201d Or dead. That fall could kill a human, no matter how thick the mat was.<\/p>\n
Jinx cleared his throat. \u201cYou might want to leave those on. Your toes are human.\u201d<\/p>\n
She straightened. \u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n
He bent a leg up to show off the bottom of his foot. \u201cSee the padding on my toes? You could compare them with calluses. I\u2019d hate for you to hurt yours or get a blister. You\u2019ll also have better traction with your shoes on so you don\u2019t slip.\u201d He dropped his leg.<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay.\u201d She blew out a breath and approached the middle section. She\u2019d done indoor climbing before but not without being in a harness, rigged to a rope in case of a fall. \u201cI wish I had gloves.\u201d<\/p>\n
He took her hand and turned it, studying it closely. One of his fingertips brushed over the tip of her index finger. He frowned. \u201cPerhaps you shouldn\u2019t climb. We don\u2019t have gloves. I didn\u2019t think about that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m good.\u201d<\/p>\n
She grabbed one of the handholds. It was curved in a way her that fit her fingers comfortably and the rim seemed solid. The inside and top even had rubber to help a climber keep a firm grip. She caught one a little higher. There were no footholds until about five feet off the ground so she had to use her upper-body strength to hold her weight until she could climb high enough to brace her feet.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve done this before.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been awhile.\u201d She was a little out of breath but it was fun. \u201cI forgot how much I like it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTake your time.\u201d<\/p>\n
She twisted her head to stare down at him. She\u2019d made it about ten feet off the ground. He stood under her. \u201cMaybe you should back away in case I slip. I\u2019d hate to land on you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cJust twist in the air so you fall sideways and I\u2019ll catch you. Tense your body if it happens.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think I\u2019ll climb up and then down. I don\u2019t have your grace. I\u2019d just go splat!\u201d She faced the wall and reached up for another handhold.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat the hell?\u201d The snarled words startled her.<\/p>\n
Kat\u2019s hand slipped but she managed to recover since she had solid footholds. She turned her head again and watched Darkness across the room. He looked furious as he glared up at her.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cClimbing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s doing good,\u201d Jinx assessed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI told you to give her a tour, not allow her to use our equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe has experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cKat?\u201d Darkness bent and tore off his boots. \u201cDon\u2019t move.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
He ignored her and pushed Jinx back. He bent at the knee and she gasped when he jumped. He landed on the wall beside her, grabbing onto handholds and finding footing. He maneuvered next to her and used his longer arms to stretch around her until he pressed against her back.<\/p>\n
\u201cTurn and wrap around me.\u201d<\/p>\n
She refused to let go. \u201cI\u2019ve got this.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDo it,\u201d he snarled.<\/p>\n
The look on his face wasn\u2019t something she could ignore. He was enraged and his eyes were almost black. He bent a little and braced. \u201cI can take your weight. Just release with one hand and twist your body. Wrap one arm around my neck and then the other. You won\u2019t fall.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI wouldn\u2019t have fallen anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cKat,\u201d he hissed, \u201cdo it or I\u2019ll tear you off and just fall back so you land on top of me. You could get hurt that way.\u201d<\/p>\n
He braced his arms wider and gave her room to move. She followed directions and ended up clinging to him. He pressed her body against the wall and let go with one hand to hook an arm under her ass. He hefted her higher.<\/p>\n
\u201cWrap your legs around my waist.\u201d<\/p>\n
She did, with his help. Her upper arms were braced against his shoulders. He climbed slowly down until his feet reached the floor. She eased her hold and slid down him until she stood in front of him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
He growled low but fixed his angry stare on Jinx. \u201cWe\u2019ll discuss this later. Take her to Security to finish the tour. Don\u2019t let her play with our weapons while you\u2019re there, either, or put her in a uniform and take her to the wall to discover how rude the protestors are\u2026for the fun of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCan we have a minute alone, Jinx? I have a few words to say to Darkness that aren\u2019t for polite company.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cUm, sure.\u201d<\/p>\n
She waited until the door closed behind him. That was her cue. \u201cWhat is wrong with you?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMe? You could have fallen.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI was doing fine until you almost scared the hell out of me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re not Species. You could have broken your neck if you\u2019d fallen from higher up.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI would have been fine. You were also really rude to Jinx. He was just trying to make the tour fun. It was until you arrived. Is he in trouble? That\u2019s messed up, Darkness. It\u2019s my fault. I insisted on climbing.\u201d It was a little white lie. I\u2019m dressed.<\/p>\n
His lips pressed into a tight line.<\/p>\n
She tried to notch down her temper. \u201cI don\u2019t know why you\u2019re acting this way. Just don\u2019t tear Jinx a new one, okay? He didn\u2019t do anything wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re protective of the male?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI guess. He shouldn\u2019t\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
Darkness moved fast and grabbed Kat around her waist, yanking her off her feet. She slammed into his chest hard enough to knock the air from her lungs. He held her so tightly that it took her a second to suck in a breath.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you want to share sex with him?\u201d<\/p>\n
She stared into Darkness\u2019 eyes and felt a shiver of fear. The cold look in them would have frozen lava. \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n
His nose flared.<\/p>\n
She opened her hands cautiously and placed them on his biceps. \u201cAre you jealous?\u201d<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t say a word to admit or deny it, just held her gaze. Some of her fear eased. She had faith that he wouldn\u2019t hurt her since the worst thing he\u2019d done was to put them at face level in a bear hug that wasn\u2019t painful.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t start mind games,\u201d he warned softly. \u201cDo you understand? I\u2019m not a male who plays well.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you interested in Jinx?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n
He blinked and his hold eased. \u201cYet you are defending him.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe didn\u2019t do anything wrong. For someone who doesn\u2019t do commitment, you\u2019re acting irrational. You realize that, don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n
He lowered her to her feet and backed away, letting her go. \u201cHe\u2019s waiting to take you to Security.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t want to talk about this?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. Forget it.\u201d<\/p>\n
As if. She stepped forward but didn\u2019t touch him. \u201cYou\u2019re jealous,\u201d she accused.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was worried.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAbout me wanting to nail Jinx?\u201d<\/p>\n
His upper lip curled and his fangs showed. \u201cStop, Kat.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFine. Are you coming by later?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay. I\u2019ll see you then.\u201d She spun away and crossed the room, refusing to glance back. He was jealous, whether he wanted to admit it or not. She opened the door. Jinx paced the hallway but stopped when he saw her. \u201cReady to show me your security setup?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSure.\u201d He flashed a dubious look toward the door.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s not friendly. You were right.\u201d She walked away, hoping to lure Jinx from the doorway before Darkness appeared. He needed some time to cool off and she wanted to analyze what had happened. She did cover for him though. \u201cDarkness is bent out of shape, thinking how bad it would look to send me back to work at the crime lab if I sprained an ankle or something.\u201d<\/p>\n
