A young chit who steals into a library to nick a naughty diary of a courtesan? I’m sold! Miss Anne Middleton is not only my sort of woman, she is what I would hope my own daughters would aspire to be–well, were they not cats. Bunny is quite old fashion, she however would be a prudent feline and a wallkitten, never would she dally with anyone, nor steal a raunchy text or exchange titillating messages with an Earl–she would be a homekitten and I would have her with me into my dotage. Now that we are straight on all that… this was one of my first Entangled ARCs and I am so happy to be part of their ARC readership. This was a book I was really excited about and it hit the spot. I have been looking for a book to itch this hot spot I’ve had since The Mad Harringtons and bless Lily Maxton because this was it exactly. I do wish I had paid closer attention and realized it was the second book of a series–ATTENTION: this is the SECOND book of a series, the first is The Affair–I’d have read that first.

Anne Middleton is a very headstrong woman with a weakness for wagers. While screwed by her own pride to prove to her sister Olivia that Lord Fairchild has the scandalous novel Confessions of a Courtesan Anne finds herself trapped in the Lord’s library while another couple seem to be having a tryst. Overhearing the love attempt fizzle out to actually be an over eager maiden trying to press her virtues on Earl of Thornhill, a man Anne’s sister had been courted by a year earlier. It doesn’t take too long for the Earl to get rid of his follower and find Anne in her not so well disguised hiding place. His disdain and disapproval doesn’t stop her from continuing the hunt for the dirty diary. His demeanor however does make her bristle and her discomfiture around him causes her to be sure she gets the last word. A mean spirited and rude comment she comes to regret soon enough.

The novel takes off from there in a series of missives between Anne and Michael which begin with her apologizing and then evolving into discussing the novel in depth. Curious Anne has no gumption about asking Michael about acts on page one hundred and two and why men’s insatiability might not be as believable as it is in the memoirs. Michael tries initially to be respectable and appropriate but you can see the seduction as it develops from flirtation to passion. I loved this book for the fact that it was a cerebral love making for a good portion of the storytelling, and Anne is the one leading the dance, by the time Michael takes control you can see that he has indulged her well enough. I look forward to reading Olivia’s story. I still have to go back and read Cale and Elizabeth’s. Note to self: Check always to make sure things aren’t in series.

Purchase The Wager:

Amazon | Amazon-CA | Amazon-UK | B&N | iTunes | Kobo | Google Play

Lily Maxton’s Web Tracks:

Website | Facebook | Twitter | Goodreads

Lily Maxton on All The Things Inbetween:

Lily Maxton Books:

The Affair Synopsis: She was his for one week only… When a beautiful stranger ducks into his bookshop during a rainstorm, Cale Cameron, well-known rake, is instantly attracted to her.
