Beau had about a dozen tasting cups from various beer festivals, souvenirs he\u2019d kept in the way people hoard things they like, and River had arranged them in two rows on the dining room table\u2014one tasting cup each for each of the beers he\u2019d picked out. A few fruity ones since Georgie liked wine and cocktails, plus a lager, a gingerbread Christmas beer, and a chocolate cherry porter he\u2019d made for Valentine\u2019s Day. She\u2019d never experienced everything that was possible with beer, so he\u2019d figured he might as well offer a wide selection to show her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019d made it through all of the fruity ones, which she\u2019d liked more than the amber, plus the lager, which had made her scrunch her nose in a cute way, and the gingerbread. The chocolate cherry was the last one he\u2019d chosen, and he did a drumroll on the table as she lifted it to her lips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She held it back from her mouth, laughing a little. \u201cIf you\u2019re not careful, you\u2019re going to make me laugh when I\u2019m drinking, and this one\u2019s going to end up on your shirt too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMaybe I want it to,\u201d he said. \u201cIt might balance out the smell of the other one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She made a face and then sipped it, and from the way she kept drinking, he knew they had another winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you taste?\u201d he asked as she pulled it away from her lips, which glistened a little from the liquid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMmm. That one was maybe my favorite, even better than the peachy one. Chocolate and cherries but not too sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what I like to hear,\u201d he said, making a plus mark next to it in the little chart she\u2019d made. Leave it to a businesswoman to carry around a notepad and pen in her purse. A monogrammed<\/em> notepad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnly one minus and five pluses,\u201d he said. \u201cGuess you like beer more than you thought.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She grinned at him, a wider, looser grin than earlier. \u201cI guess maybe I do. Although you\u2019re being a little generous with those plus signs. I said the mango sour was interesting<\/em>. That was a nice way of saying I\u2019m not going back for seconds<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He hammed up a dramatic frown as he scribbled out the plus sign and added a minus sign next to it on the chart. \u201cDemoted! Does this mean I have to be suspicious of anything you call interesting?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, just the mango sour.\u201d She paused, meeting and holding his gaze. \u201cYou<\/em>, River Reeves, are quite interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her eyes sparkled as she said it, and he felt warmth pulse through him. He found her interesting too, and he was running out of reasons why he shouldn\u2019t. She planned on staying, on restoring Beau\u2019s brewery, and he had no doubt she had the brains and means to do it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this woman had been to business school\u2014she\u2019d formed a business from nothing\u2014and he was almost thirty and still a few community college classes short of a degree. He\u2019d fumbled his way into the job that he\u2019d quit a few hours ago. He doubted he was Georgie Buchanan\u2019s type, or at least her type for more than one night. And for some reason, that wasn\u2019t what he wanted from her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like the porter too,\u201d he said, clearing his throat and reaching for his tasting cup. The moment shattered, like he\u2019d meant it to. \u201cWe sold out at the brewery, but I brought a six-pack over to Beau\u2019s. This one\u2019s all that\u2019s left.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad you did,\u201d she said, reaching for the bottle the porter had come in. \u201cI think I\u2019m going to claim the rest of this one for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
