It’s probably weird to be sitting on the doorstep of the man I cyberstalked after his whole love sucks<\/em> speech after my failed wedding. But I won\u2019t apologize for waiting for Luca here at what I think is his house, because you don\u2019t get what you need in life if you don\u2019t go for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, maybe Dogzilla and I should be waiting in my car instead? At least that way, I could turn on the radio while we wait. And the air conditioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m about to move to the car when a clunker chugs around the corner, one headlight out, and turns into the driveway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is definitely the wrong house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m sitting on the porch of a stranger\u2019s house, hoping that\u2019s a woman driving, because if it\u2019s a woman, at least I know I won\u2019t be in danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of falling in love with her at first sight, I mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The engine shuts off, and while I don\u2019t often trespass at midnight, I have this feeling that jumping up with Dogzilla and making a run for it right now is exactly the wrong move. A well-timed, “Oh, sorry, I thought you were someone else,” will give us all a laugh, I\u2019ll take my cat and leave, and then two complete strangers will have a weird story to tell their friends over margaritas\u2014or an iced tea, in my case\u2014and huh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This would make an excellent meet-cute for my friend Dorothea\u2019s next steamy romance novel. I\u2019ll have to drop her a note too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The occupant of the car is still sitting in it, and the figure illuminated by the street light looks too big to be a woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dang it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also seems to be\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is he hitting his head against the steering wheel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uh-oh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I picked the house of a nutjob, all bets are off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Be ready to run, Dogzilla,” I whisper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My lazy cat doesn\u2019t move, and instead snores in my lap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easier this way anyway, since it\u2019s not like I can count on her to follow alone when I take off running at full-steam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which doesn\u2019t happen all that often, if we\u2019re being honest here. I\u2019m a writer, not a runner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\u2014wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The way his hair is moving\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is<\/em> Luca Rossi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I rise, cradling Dogzilla, and when Luca looks my way, I give him a finger wave and a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The light isn\u2019t bright enough for me to see what he\u2019s saying, but his lips are definitely moving, and if I\u2019m not mistaken, he\u2019s wearing the same long-suffering expression my father usually has when I tell him I\u2019m engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It might also be remarkably similar to the expression Luca was wearing when he recognized me at Duggan Field earlier today too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not my intention to ambush him at work, I swear. I was curious about the ballpark\u2014I\u2019m curious about a lot of things\u2014so when I caught wind on social media of a writer organization that was touring the park, it was easy enough to get here in time today to join the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it was fascinating to see where the players work out, to smell the chairs the announcers sit in, what it feels like to stand in the dugout, and hear how many light bulbs have to be replaced every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a pop and a creak as the car door swings open, and I suddenly desperately need to know why Luca Rossi, millionaire sports star, lives on a grocery store clerk\u2019s salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I swear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I like to do research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s one of the things my ex-fianc\u00e9 Kyle liked about me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Henri,” Luca says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My brain hears what the hell are you doing here, and why are you between me and my bed, and I\u2019m not asking out loud because I don\u2019t honestly want to know<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I either have a lot of experience understanding people because I write good characters, or I have a lot of experience with frustrating men after five failed engagements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus my lifelong relationship with my father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hi, Luca! Great game tonight. That catch you made in center field was like\u2014”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The one where I didn\u2019t move, the one where I stepped three feet to my left, or the one where I had to take two steps back?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay, yeah, he had an easy game. “How did you know where the ball was going to be? That\u2019s like\u2014it\u2019s like you\u2019re psychic.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It\u2019s called being a professional.” He squeezes his eyes shut briefly, opens them, eyeballs Dogzilla in my arms, and then sighs again. “To what do I owe the pleasure of your company tonight?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wow. He\u2019s cranky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not gonna lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know it\u2019s probably me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that\u2019s no excuse for not forging ahead. I didn\u2019t come all this way to chicken out. “You remember the last time we saw each other?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This afternoon in the clubhouse?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I liked your hat, but I meant the time\u2026before that.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He closes the distance between us with three casual steps. “Nope.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I go momentarily speechless as a waft of something delicious teases my nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But only momentarily. A quick recovery is a gift. Or possibly a defense mechanism. “The time we were together\u2026in that town\u2026with that big monument\u2026and the event thing\u2026”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The event thing that didn\u2019t\u2014”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I\u2019m trying to block it from my memory.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Oh. Oh! Thank you. That\u2019s very kind of you. Sorry. I didn\u2019t realize\u2014”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That I wouldn\u2019t want to remember your ruined wedding, that you like to redecorate people with dessert, and that your ex-fianc\u00e9 is the first man that my mother\u2019s dated in three years and I might have to start calling him Stepdad<\/em>?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wince.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My heart also weeps because yeah, still not over seeing Jerry lock lips with a woman who could\u2019ve been my mother, and hearing that it might actually be going somewhere is salt in the wound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So, no, Henri, I don\u2019t remember the last time we were together. At least, I won\u2019t, once I get inside and pour myself a large enough vodka tonic. Care for one?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again, I\u2019m momentarily speechless. “Um, I\u2019m kinda allergic\u2014”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cut myself off when one of his brows rises infinitesimally, and then I gasp. Of course he knows I\u2019m allergic. We had an entire conversation about it. “Are you trying<\/em> to send me to the hospital?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No, but I am<\/em> trying to get into my house. Alone. Preferably without the sad panda thoughts I\u2019d finally managed to shake before you showed up today.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Oh. That was a hint.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I\u2019m bad with the subtle.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He swipes a hand over his mouth and looks up at the sky, and I\u2019m certain he\u2019s not stifling a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Probably the exact opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time to forge ahead. “I\u2019m here because I need your help.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And now I pay the price for my sins,” he mutters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019d ask what his sins are, but my google searches were very<\/em> thorough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Normally, he really would be the last person on earth I\u2019d turn to for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don\u2019t want money or anything like that. And I\u2019d rather no one know I\u2019m here, so I\u2019m not after your fame either, though I wouldn\u2019t mind some tips on how to get my hair as good as yours always is. I\u2019ve tried Kangapoo before, and\u2014wait. Sorry. Off-topic. I need you to teach me how to not fall in love.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
