\u201cDo I look so different?\u201d Zon continued. \u201cJust because my mother is from another planet? Because she is human and my father is a mecaw<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is very little difference between a human and a mecaw<\/em>,\u201d JOH reminded. \u201cIt\u2019s practically the same word\u2013just different languages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf that\u2019s so\u2013\u201d Zon slipped on loose gravel, his thick sandal flirting with the jagged precipice, \u201c\u2013then why do they judge me as an alien? I look like everyone around here, don\u2019t I?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a plea he had asked JOH a thousand times. Each time, the intuitive ball offered a different response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKeep in mind who you\u2019re asking. But, yes, you have your father\u2019s tall frame and solid build. You have his strength. Your hair is dark like a Ziratakian, but under the suns it bears a flash of red from your mother. And your face\u2013there are more curves to your face\u2013\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

JOH stopped, sensing that his feedback went unheard. He waited until Zon maneuvered the most precarious incline, and then zipped alongside him once they reached a bluff high above the crater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not what they see<\/em>,\u201d JOH considered quietly, bobbing against the strong winds at this high altitude. \u201cIt\u2019s what they know. They know you are different. Sometimes that\u2019s all it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zon rubbed the back of his arm across his forehead. Perspiration lurked here even with the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t call my mother, Gorzot<\/em>, and she truly is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JOH\u2019s face slipped down at an angle. \u201cThey accepted your mother long ago as one of them. She did a lot for the Ziratakians. She helped rid the drylands of the Korons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, why won\u2019t they accept me<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zon hated the whiny plea. Regretting the outburst the moment he voiced it, he kicked a rock off the cliff and watched it vanish into the fissures grooved from ancient landslides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He knew, though. It wasn\u2019t just the subtle disparities in his appearance. It was his lack of trying to fit in. It was he<\/em> who alienated himself. He<\/em> was the one who remained distant. Aloof. Different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As much as Ziratak was his home, he never felt rooted here. He felt the galaxies held a unique destiny for him\u2013something far from the crimson-colored lowlands, baking under two suns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
