Hashtag: Stupid Cupid – Eight Hundred Words On Love by Berengaria Brown

HashCupidEight hundred words? Wow this is a huge challenge.

When Ali asked me to join this blog event I was really excited. I have a new book coming out for Valentine’s Day and it was scheduled to be on pre-order on 1 February so this was absolutely perfect.

The book is called “Chocolate-Coated Reunion” and it’s an MM story about two men who like each other. They’d planned to meet for drinks on Christmas Eve but it hadn’t happened. That is, it hadn’t happened in a major drama way that left one man devastated and other feeling stood-up and unloved.

So the one who missed the date plans again for a date on Valentine’s Day, and the story explains what happens next.

When I wrote that book of Cupid letting these two men down at Christmas, I must have been psychic. I love this story. I adore the two heroes, Matt and Jake. “Chocolate-Coated Reunion” is being released in a twelve-author boxed set called “Naughty Hearts”, produced by the Naughty Literati.

I worked with these amazing authors on a Christmas boxed set as well, called “Naughty List” and it was a lot of fun. The authors are all multi-published, highly professional, experienced writers, and the Christmas anthology went really well.

So here I was all set up expecting an equally smooth passage from turning in my book, through edits and proofreading, to production. The story went well. The edits were fine. Proofreading was a breeze.

So far so good.

But then the book hasn’t made it up on preorder. The print version of the book is up already for sale, but the digital version? No.
Ah yes. Cupid is playing his dastardly little tricks on poor Matt and Jake again.

Here I am with a Valentine’s Day blog to write, about a Cupid-flavored book, and my beautiful brand-new Valentine’s Day book that fit the topic so perfectly is not up for preorder as it was scheduled to be.

Well hell.

So what am I supposed to do now? I’m on deadline here. Do I write about another book that isn’t Valentine’s Day themed? Do I write about star-crossed lovers? Do I make something up? Do I pretend the book is on pre-order and just give the print buy link when I know most people prefer a digital book to read on their phones or iPad?

Cupid, how could you do this to me?

And if I write about a different book which different book do I choose? Another MM story because “Chocolate-Coated Reunion” is an MM book? A ménage because a lot of people really like ménages? My latest new release? A werewolf book because Ali reviewed “Would You Trust a Werewolf?”

@#$&ing hell, Cupid. Can’t you give a poor writer a break here? It’s crunch time on the deadline and I’m all out of ideas here.

So, sometimes true love doesn’t run smoothly. Poor Matt and Jake are testament to that. And sometimes a writer’s life also doesn’t run smoothly. No book up on pre-order is an example of that. Fortunately I’m a “have laptop will write” kind of person. Maybe I could write eight hundred words on chocolate. Chocolate is a very important part of true love. I have a love-affair with chocolate myself. And chocolate plays a part in Matt and Jake’s story. Actually I’d rather eat chocolate than write about it. Chocolate is good like that. I can suck a piece while my fingers dance over the keyboard writing words of love about dark chocolate, rich Belgian chocolate, and fine milk chocolate. But I don’t think there are eight hundred words in that. Apart from this book, I don’t even think chocolate has played much of a part in my books at all. I really need to fix that, and soon.

Maybe I could write about Cupid himself. A chubby little man with a bow and arrows. I did use warriors with bows and arrows in my medieval ménage series of books, “Elinor’s Stronghold”. None of them were chubby though. They were big, strong, tough warriors and fighters. Tall, hard-muscled, bare-chested men with long (cough) swords.

All my heroes are distinct individuals. It’s quite possible a chubby one will turn up in my head one day. But none has yet. I have had two heroes who weren’t tall. Both are in MM stories. One was a flamboyantly gay interior designed named Basil (“Sunshine Yellow Days”) and the other was Zeph, the server at the café in the gay bath house in “Wanting His Man”.

I’ve had an overweight heroine, Beverly, in “Seeds of Love”, and several others who worry about their weight. Hm. So many women worry about their weight. Likely I ought not write about chocolate after all. It might make women hungry and upset that they can’t have some to eat.

Sigh.

Well, I’m sorry, Cupid. I expect one day Matt and Jake will finally make it up onto pre-order as they’re supposed to. Meanwhile, I’ll just have to give people links to where it’ll turn up when it finally arrives.

You see, Cupid, Love Will Always Find a Way!
